Immerse yourself in a captivating journey through Pepijn's artistic evolution, from his early obsession with maps to his latest masterpieces inspired by video games like Metroid Prime and Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.

‘‘My name is Pepijn Schermer (1982) and I’m an Amsterdam-based autodidactic illustration and animation artist. At a very young age I was obsessed with maps, and my very first drawings were straight from the atlas. Later on, this obsession dwindled a bit and other drawing subjects such as video games and comics, among others, caught my interest. One of those games was Metroid Prime (2002)

The updated world design of Metroid Prime Remastered (2023) was very intriguing, because it hinted at a larger world, yet at the same time was essentially just a series of confined rooms. Since there is hardly a place where you have a good vista beyond those rooms I wondered how this would look as a whole. Eventually that thought got me into making the map of planet Tallon IV. After finishing this map the release of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom was right around the corner, and I decided to apply the mapmaking trick to that game as well. The results of these artistic endeavors can be seen in Arcade Hotel Amsterdam.’’
