The Arcade Talks 2: Female Representation in Video Games and the Gaming Industry.

March 28th | 19:30 - 21:30

The Arcade Talks series is back! On March 28th we´ll celebrate women in all of their glory with our second talk: “Female Representation in Video Games and the Gaming Industry”.

From the often kidnapped Princess Peach to the seductive archaeologist, Lara Croft, video game heroines have been frequently presented as the opposite of their male counterparts. In fact, we can still trace numerous examples of gender inequality in contemporary games. And while video games might sound as an inclusive industry, this has not always been the case.

During the Talk, we will look at some examples of gender representation in video games throughout history as well as explore gender issues in the industry itself and its communities.

Our host for the evening will be Aris Emmanouloudis from The University of Amsterdam. Aris is a media studies expert and doctoral researcher focusing on video game communities. He has written on topics like video game fandom, television storytelling and audience participation, and online news media.

After the talk, there will be enough time for questions and discussion, followed by a play session in the Arcade Hotel’s Game Room specially arranged for the occasion.
