Submachine: A Game Series for Adventurers

You are alone in a basement. And you need to get out. Simple, eh? Maybe not.
What begun as just one entry by Mateusz Skutnik, became a fan-favourite series in the indie game scene, especially for the lovers of adventure games. The player needs to use items in an “escape room” environment to solve puzzles and find their way out of the basement they are trapped in. At the same time, despite the lack of other characters, you constantly have a feeling that you are not alone. Add to that the use of ambient music (à la “Myst” series), and you make this a game (and subsequent series) a timeless, atmospheric experience.
The series started in mid-00’s, and slowly the creator would release new entries every now and then. At the moment, there are more than 10 games, including main entries, spin-offs, and remakes. In those, the unnamed main character explores a vast array of interconnected rooms that all belong to the “Submachine” network. It is quite unclear (at least in the beginning) how they were created and by whom, and how they operate. In the meantime, fans have created various threads on message boards with theories on what exactly is happening within the Submachine world.
You can find the games here for free or you can find their paid versions on the creator’s website. You can also wishlist the series’ HD remake on Steam.
Happy venturing!
